PERIODONTAL CARE IN
CLEARWATER

Among general dentistry issues, gum disease (periodontal disease) is more common than one might expect. It’s estimated that over half of American adults have some form of gum disease (and are often aware that they are suffering from this issue). If left untreated, patients struggling with it can risk developing additional problems, up to and including the loss of their teeth.  Our Beyond Dentistry Clearwater team can reverse the first stage of gum disease (gingivitis) through personalized periodontal care.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease occurs when oral bacteria, plaque, and tartar accumulate between your teeth and gums. Gradually, periodontal disease-causing pathogens harm the gum tissue. Then, begin to infect and destroy it.

When Is Periodontal Care Necessary?

If Dr. Alqasemi or Dr. Adham notices signs of gum disease (like a receding gum line), they will suggest appropriate treatment.

Our Periodontal Care Process: What to Expect

Generally, periodontal disease treatment is based on the gum disease stage and the symptoms the sufferer is experiencing:

  • Gingivitis: Gum disease is categorized by many stages, and the first stage is known as “gingivitis.” Although gingivitis symptoms often go unnoticed, the damage to your teeth and gums is typically reversible through deep dental cleanings, excellent at-home oral hygiene, and proper care.

  • Periodontitis: As gingivitis advances, it becomes the second stage of gum disease known as “periodontitis.” At this stage of development, you might notice bleeding gums or receding gums, and the progression of the disease can be seized (but not reversed).

  • Advanced Periodontitis: The final stage of gum disease is “advanced periodontitis. When the disease progresses to this point, you might need more extensive treatments (like oral surgery and dental restoration to restore your dental health, such as extraction and tooth replacement with tooth bridges, dentures, or dental implants).

As a rule of thumb, more advanced stages of periodontitis require more advanced and frequent treatment.

How does periodontal disease impact your overall health?

Many researchers support that periodontal disease can significantly impact your overall systemic health. Gum disease is an inflammatory disease. When the inflammation from the gums travels through the small blood vessels in the mouth and spreads throughout the body, this increases the risk of developing or worsening severe health conditions (like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, certain cancers, and more). Thankfully, periodontal care can manage (and sometimes reverse) gum disease and preserve your overall health

Is gum disease preventable?

If you have gingivitis, staying on top of your regular cleanings, checkups, and at-home care will help you to regain control over your oral health before it becomes irreversible.

How often should we schedule periodontal care visits?

Our Beyond Dentistry Clearwater team usually recommends scheduling deep cleaning sessions every three to four months, depending on your unique needs. Although the effects of more advanced periodontitis are irreversible, deep cleanings, scaling, and root planing can stop gum disease in its tracks and help preserve your oral well-being.

How It Works: Our Periodontal Therapy Process

Consultation

To begin the process, Dr. Hiba Alqasemi or Dr. Ziad Adham will examine your mouth, assess the extent of your gum disease, and develop a treatment plan. They will create a custom plan based on your individual needs, and work with you to restore your oral health.

Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing)

The first step in arresting your gum disease is periodontal therapy. This is also called “scaling and root planing.” This process involves cleaning below your gum line and around your teeth to remove bacteria and calculus buildup. This is usually done over the span of two appointments.

Follow-up & further treatments

After your deep cleaning, you’ll come back for a follow-up at Beyond Dentistry Clearwater. Dr. Alqasemi or Dr. Adham will assess your tissue’s response to treatment and work with you to schedule any necessary further treatments to halt the progression of your gum disease.
